Final Exam Questions

What Do I Need on My Final Exam to Get an A?

To secure a 90% (A-) with a current 92% and a 20% final, you need an 82.0% on your final exam.

If your target is a solid A (93%) and you currently hold a 91% with a 25% final, you will need a 99.0% on your final exam.

How This Is Calculated

Required Final = [Target Grade - Current Grade × (1 - Weight)] ÷ Weight

For a 90% target with a 92% current grade and a 20% final: Required = [90 - 92 × 0.80] ÷ 0.20 = [90 - 73.6] ÷ 0.20 = 16.4 ÷ 0.20 = 82.0%.

Maintaining a buffer above 93% throughout the semester gives you substantial breathing room on final exam day.

If your final exam is comprehensive and replaces a lower midterm score, calculating your target is even more advantageous.
