Final Exam Questions

Can I Still Pass If I Fail the Final Exam?

Yes, you can still pass the class if you fail the final, provided your running grade is high enough to absorb the point loss.

For example, if you enter the final with an 88% (B+) and score a failing 50% (F) on a 20% final, your course grade will be 80.4% (B-), passing easily.

How This Is Calculated

Final Course Grade = (Current Grade × 0.80) + (Final Score × 0.20)

Calculation: (88 × 0.80) + (50 × 0.20) = 70.4 + 10.0 = 80.4% (B-). Because 80.4% is well above the 60% (D) or 70% (C) passing cutoff, you pass the course.

The only exception is if your syllabus contains a "mandatory final pass" policy, stating that students must pass the final exam to pass the course regardless of cumulative average.

Check your syllabus for any special final exam grading rules before assuming your running average guarantees a passing grade.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the lowest score I can get on the final and still pass?

Use the formula: Minimum Final Score = (60 - Current Grade × (1 - Weight)) / Weight.

Do all professors require you to pass the final exam?

No, the vast majority of courses use cumulative weighted averages. Only specific departments (such as nursing or clinical labs) enforce standalone final exam pass requirements.
